Mahatma Gandhi began his political activities in India from Champaran. Champaran, located in present-day Bihar, was the site of a significant event in India`s freedom struggle known as the Champaran Satyagraha. In 1917, Gandhi visited Champaran to support the farmers who were being forced to grow indigo and were suffering from oppressive land tenure system. This was Gandhi`s first major political campaign in India and marked the beginning of his nonviolent resistance movement. By mobilizing the local farmers and conducting investigations, Gandhi was successful in bringing attention to their grievances and ultimately leading to the resolution of their issues. This event played a pivotal role in shaping Gandhi`s philosophy of Satyagraha and his role as a leader in the Indian independence movement.
