The basic aim of the Lead Bank Scheme is that individual banks should adopt particular districts for intensive development. The Lead Bank Scheme was launched by the Reserve Bank of India in 1969 to provide banking services in rural and semi-urban areas of the country. Under the scheme, each district in the country is assigned to a lead bank, which is responsible for coordinating the efforts of other banks in the district to increase credit flow to priority sectors like agriculture, small-scale industries, and other marginalized sections of society. The lead bank also plays a key role in financial inclusion initiatives and mobilizing deposits in the district.
